Understanding Hybrid Inverters: The Best of Both Worlds

For many homeowners in Kajiado, the main challenge is balancing the convenience of the national grid with the savings of solar. This is where the hybrid inverter comes in, as the “brain” of a modern energy system. Unlike a traditional inverter, a hybrid model can manage power from your solar panels, your battery and the grid at the same time. It can be set to use solar energy first during the day to run your house, drawing on the grid or your battery only when needed.

A big advantage of a hybrid system is its automatic switchover. When there is a blackout on the main line, the hybrid inverter switches over automatically in moments, drawing power from your battery so that your computers, internet router and security systems keep running. That makes it a good fit for anyone in Kiserian who works from home and needs steady power through the day.

A hybrid system also lets you grow over time. You can start with a few panels and a single battery, then add capacity as your budget allows, within the limits of your inverter. Because a hybrid inverter is designed to handle several power sources, it gives you the flexibility to go fully off-grid one day, or simply to use less KPLC power during the day.

Key points

  • A hybrid inverter combines an inverter, an MPPT solar charge controller and a grid charger in one box.
  • It switches to battery and solar automatically when KPLC goes off; only the circuits wired to it stay on.
  • Match the battery voltage to the inverter: 12V, 24V or 48V.
  • Size the inverter for what runs at the same time, and the battery for how long it must run.

Can a hybrid inverter keep my house running during a KPLC blackout?

Yes, within its size. A hybrid inverter charges your battery from solar panels and KPLC power, then switches over automatically when the grid goes off, so connected lights, TV, Wi-Fi and fridge keep running from the battery. How long it lasts depends on battery size and load; cookers, kettles and water heaters drain small systems fast.

Only the circuits wired to the inverter stay on, so we agree with you which ones matter before we install. WhatsApp us your appliance list and we will size it.

What is the difference between a hybrid and a normal inverter?

A hybrid inverter combines an inverter, a solar charge controller (MPPT) and a grid charger in one box, so it can power your home from solar, battery and KPLC electricity. A normal inverter only turns battery power into AC and needs a separate charge controller. Our YACHU hybrid inverters cost KSh 27,000 to KSh 45,000.

Our normal (standard) YACHU 12V inverters cost KSh 2,500 (300W) and KSh 3,500 (600W), with a 1000W model on request. They suit small loads such as a TV, router and laptop.

What is a hybrid inverter?

A hybrid inverter is the control box of a solar system: it takes power from solar panels, a battery and KPLC, decides which to use, charges the battery and switches over automatically when the grid fails. YACHU hybrid inverters at Technics Electricals & Solar cost KSh 27,000 (1.5kW), KSh 33,000 (3.5kW) and KSh 45,000 (6.2kW).
