• Light switches, 10A with slim screwed plates: 1-gang 1-way (KSh 100), 2-gang 2-way (KSh 140), 3-gang 2-way (KSh 180) and 4-gang 2-way on a single plate (KSh 300).
• Sockets and plugs: 13A 1-gang switched socket (KSh 200), 2-gang switched socket with a switch for each outlet (KSh 300) and a 13A fused 3-pin top plug (KSh 150).
• Cooker and water-heater switches: a 45A cooker switch with switched socket and neon indicator (KSh 450) and a 45A water-heater switch with neon (ask for today's price).

Which switch do I need?

"Gang" is the number of switches on one plate, one for each light or fan. A 1-way switch controls a light from one place; a 2-way switch lets you control the same light from two places, such as the top and bottom of the stairs. For a room with several lights near one door, a 3-gang or 4-gang plate keeps the wall tidy and needs only one box.

Sockets, cookers and water heaters

Use 13A switched sockets for everyday appliances, and give an electric cooker its own 45A cooker switch. A water heater should also have its own switch, and the neon indicator shows when it is on so it is not left running by mistake. The fused top plug is for rewiring an appliance or an extension lead: fit a fuse that suits the appliance. The surge-protected extension is meant for a TV, decoder, Wi-Fi router, computer and chargers; avoid running heaters or kettles from an extension lead.

About the solar floodlight

The Carl & Gilbert 200W solar floodlight needs no mains wiring: the 20W panel charges the lithium battery by day and the light switches on at dusk and off at dawn. Wattage on solar floodlights is the maker's rating and is not directly comparable with a mains floodlight, so for a large compound also look at our MODI and Vellmax solar floodlights.
